Meringue Cookies


4 egg whites
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 1/2 cups sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 cup chocolate chips
1 cup nuts, optional


Beat whites until frothy; add salt, then gradually add sugar, beating continuously. Continue beating until whites will stand in stiff peaks. Fold in vanilla, chocolate chips and nuts. Drop from teaspoonful on 2 very slightly greased cookie sheets. Bake at 300 degrees for 25 minutes. Remove immediately. Garnish with candied 1/4 cherry or chocolate chips. Makes about 4 dozen.
