Known as the “Depression Sandwich”, this hot dog with a wealth of toppings only cost a nickel in the 1930s and supplied nourishment on the cheap. The Chicago dog has evolved and become part of Chicago’s cultural identity.
Ingredients
- 4 Hot dogs
- 4 Hot dog buns
- 3 tablespoons Chicago or Sweet relish
- 3 tablespoons Yellow mustard
- 8 Tomato wedges
- 8 Dill pickle spears
- 8 Sport peppers
- ½ White onion, finely diced
- ¼ teaspoon Celery salt
Preparation
- 1. Preheat grill on high.
- 2. Reduce to medium and grill hot dogs while warming buns on upper rack.
- 3. Open hot dog bun and add hot dog.
- 4. Top hot dog with a spoonful of relish and drizzle of yellow mustard.
- 5. Top with 2 tomato wedges, 2 pickle spears, 2 sport peppers, and spoon on onions.
- 6. Garnish with a sprinkle of celery salt.
