Fruit Cake Cookies

This is an old recipe from a cook in Alabama. It is the best fruitcake recipe I've ever tasted. It must be all the spices, which I love!!!"


1 and 1/2 cup brown sugar, packed
3 cups plain flour
1/2 cup plain flour for fruit
4 eggs
1 stick butter
1/2 lb. candied pineapple
1/2 lb. candied cherries
1 box white raisins
8 oz of dried dates, chopped
6 cups of chopped pecans
1 tsp. nutmeg
1 tsp. cinnamon
1 tsp. ground cloves
1 tsp. ground allspice
3 tsp. baking soda
3 Tbs. buttermilk
3/4 cup whiskey


Cream butter, add sugar, whiskey, then buttermilk and mix. Add lightly beaten eggs and mix. Sift dry ingredients together and add to mixture gradually. Add fruit that has been mixed with 1/2 cup (extra) flour. Dredge thoroughly. Drop by teaspoonful onto cookie sheet that has been greased and floured. Bake 10 to 12 minutes in a 350 degree oven. Do not get too brown. Cool. Pack in wax paper lined airtight container. Will keep indefinitely. (That's what my friend said. I've not kept them around that long.)
