Moms Butter Cookies

My mother and I would always make these and many other cookies well before Christmas for us and give-aways. She always made sure there were enough "burnt" cookies for my brother and I to snack on so we wouldn't eat the good ones. To tell the truth, those second best always tasted better!

2 sticks margarine ⅔ cup sugar 1 egg 1 teaspoon baking powder 2½ cups flour

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Cream margarine and sugar until fluffy. Add egg and beat until combined. Add dry ingredients, mix well. Chill dough 30 minutes or until it will roll our easily. Roll dough ⅛th inch thick. Use desired cookie cutters. Transfer to ungreased cookie sheets. Decorate with colored sugars. Bake 7 to 10 minutes or until light brown. (Try not to burn the edges) Transfer to cooling racks. Store in tightly covered container separate layers with waxed or parchment paper.
