Ingredients

vegetable oil cooking spray ¾ cup walnuts, coarsely chopped 3-⅔ tablespoons sugar 1½ cups all-purpose flour 1½ cups quick cooking oats ¾ cup dark brown sugar ¾ cup margarine or butter, in 1-inch pieces ¾ teaspoon baking soda ¼ teaspoon salt 3 Granny Smith apples, peeled and cored

Preparation

Preheat oven to 350° F. Spray a Cuisinart® Roast/Bake Pan or other 13 x 9 x 2 - inch baking dish with vegetable oil cooking spray. Place walnuts and sugar in a Cuisinart® food processor fitted with the metal blade. Pulse to coarsely chop, about 5 times; reserve. Place flour and next 5 ingredients in the food processor. Pulse until mixture is crumbly, about 7 - 8 times; reserve. Do not overprocess. Insert the thin (2mm) slicing disc. Place one apple in the large feed tube and slice using light pressure. Repeat with remaining apples. Spread half of the crumb mixture in the bottom of the pan. Arrange the apple slices over the crumb mixture, then layer half the sugar-nut mixture followed by the remaining crumb mixture. Top with remaining sugar-nut mixture and pat down gently. Bake until apples are tender and top is lightly browned, about 30 minutes. Let cool slightly; cut into bars while warm.
