- 1 ¼ cup sugar
- ½ cup shortening
- 1 ½ cup flour
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 4 tablespoon cocoa
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 1 egg
- 1 teaspoon vanilla

- Preheat oven to 350°F.
- Cream sugar and shortening. Whisk egg into buttermilk. Sift all dry ingredients together.
- Alternate beating the dry ingredients and buttermilk mix into the creamed ingredients. When almost combined, add the vanilla.
- Spoon batter into a 6" x12" pan and bake for around 20 minutes, until nicely browned or a toothpick comes out clean.
- Serve as is, or with fruit preserves.
