Christmas Cut-Out Cookies

Not your usual sweet sugar cookie cut-out. The nutmeg gives these cookies an added kick.

  • 1 cup butter, softened 
  • 1 cup granulated sugar 
  • 1 cup brown sugar 
  • 4 eggs 
  • 3 tablespoons water 
  • 6 cups flour 
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda 
  • 1 teaspoon salt 
  • 1 teaspoon ground nutmeg 
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla

  1. Preheat oven to 350º. In a large mixing bowl cream together the butter and sugars until well blended. In another bowl combine the flour, baking soda, salt, and ground nutmeg. Add the eggs, one at a time, to the butter mixture. Alternately add the dry ingredients and the water to the butter mixture and mix until well blended. 
  2. Refrigerate for 1 to 2 hours before rolling dough. Roll dough about ⅛-inch thick and cut with a variety of cookie cutters. Place ½ inch apart on ungreased cookie sheets. Bake for 8 minutes or until lightly browned. Cool completely on rack before decorating. Makes 8 to 9 dozen cookies depending on the size of the cookie cutters. 
  3. Cookies can be decorated with colored sugar or decorator’s icing.
