Best Birthday Cake

This is the birthday cake Mother always made for us. It always smelled so good. She is 93 now, but does not do any cooking.

8 large or 12 smaller

Ingredients

⅓ C. Shortening (I use butter)⅔ C. Cocoa 2 C. Sugar 4 eggs 1 C. Sifted Flour 1 t. Baking Powder ½ t. Salt 2 t. vanilla 1 C. nuts (pecans and walnuts are good)

Instructions

Melt shortening over low heat. Stir in cocoa and sugar. Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each one. Add vanilla, beat. Add flour mixed with salt and baking powder. Beat well. Fold in nuts. Pour into two 8 inch round pans. Bake at 350 degrees for 30 to 35 minutes. Let cool. Frost with your favorite frosting, putting one layer on top of the other.
