Applesauce Cookies with Cream Cheese Frosting

This recipe was given to me in 1976 by a neighbor in Davenport, Iowa. It's become one of my family's favorite recipes. These disappear fast!


3 to 4 dozen cookies


½ cup shortening ¾ cup granulated sugar 1 egg lightly beaten 1 cup canned applesauce 2 cups all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon cinnamon ½ teaspoon cloves 1 teaspoon baking soda 1 teaspoon salt 1 cups raisins optional: Frosting: 4 tablespoons butter at room temperature, 1 3-ounce package cream cheese at room temperature, 1½ cups powdered sugar, 1 teaspoon vanilla.

Cookies: Cream shortening and sugar. Add the egg and applesauce. Mix well. Mix the dry ingredients together and add to the applesauce mixture (add raisins now if using). Mix well. Drop by teaspoonfuls on greased cookie sheet. Bake at 375-degrees F. for 12 minutes. Frost when completely cooled. Frosting: Place all ingredients in a small bowl and beat to spreading consistency.
