Almond Apricot Danish Bars

These bars are better than any danish pastry you can get at a bakery. The filling is a delicious combination of fruit jam and toasty almonds.




1 (1 pound) loaf frozen bread dough, thawed 1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese, softened 2 tablespoons butter, softened ½ cup apricot jam 1 cup roasted almonds ¼ cup sugar 2 tablespoons butter, chilled 1 egg ¾ cup slivered almonds

Preheat oven to 350 degrees and grease a 10 X 15 inch baking pan. Roll out bread dough into an 11 X 16 rectangle. In a medium bowl, beat cream cheese, softened butter and apricot jam until well blended. Fit bread dough into prepared pan making a rim around the edge. Spread with cream cheese mixture. In a blender, whirl 1 cup almonds, sugar, chilled butter and egg. Drop in dollops evenly over cream cheese mixture, spread gently. Sprinkle with slivered almonds and bake for 25 to 30 minutes until edges are golden brown.
