Baby Food Stages Demystified

When and how to introduce foods to your baby can be a very fun but confusing time period. Baby food is often made in “stages” and as your baby gets older they begin to explore foods in a higher stage. Here’s a simple guide to the differences between each stage and when your baby should move to the next one.

Stage 1
At this stage the food is normally pureed and are made of one ingredient such as carrots or bananas. They are also bland. These factors make it easy for your baby to digest the food. Stage 1 is introduced at 4-6 months of age. Try this stage 1 avocado recipe.

Stage 2
When your baby is 7-8 months old you can move onto stage 2 foods. These foods are thicker in consistency because they can be strained, not only pureed. Some examples are apples and plums or chicken and brown rice. Here’s a great stage 2 chicken and barley recipe.

Stage 3
At 9-12 months your baby will most likely be ready for stage 3 foods. At this stage the jars are a little larger to match your baby’s growing appetite. Even though the food is strained, there are small chunks to get your baby ready for chewing. Some flavor examples include spaghetti with cheese and apple cinnamon oatmeal. After your baby’s first birthday it’s time to introduce table foods! This can be a very exciting step for you and your family but remember to avoid potential choking hazards such as nuts, grapes and candy.
