If you couldn’t quite make time for those 7-8 hours of sleep last night or you just need a little pick-me-up, we’ve made a list of 6 healthy foods and drinks that will not only boost your energy-levels but will also help lift your mood.

Stimulating Drinks:

A regular 5-6 fl. oz. cup of Coffee has about 71 mg of the stimulant caffeine and is only about 5 calories. Drinking up to 4 cups of coffee daily has been shown to lower incidence of Alzheimer’s and Dementia with regular consumption, so feel free to adjust your caffeine intake as needed. Switch up your regular cup of Joe by trying this recipe for Turkish Coffee.

Espresso is stronger than regular coffee, both in taste and its energizing effects. Espresso has about 64 mg of caffeine in just 1 fl. oz. With the petite standard serving size of around 1.5 fl. oz., it is even lower in calories and has all of the same added health benefits. Even a tiny shot of espresso is sure to deliver the energy-boost you need.

Green Tea has about 25 mg of caffeine in a regular serving of 8 fl. oz., containing only about a third of the amount of caffeine found in coffee. Green tea is not only high in antioxidants, but has also been shown to aid in weight loss. Add honey to your cup of green tea for an extra kick of energy.

Energizing Foods:

In addition to being a good source of daily vitamins and fiber, Apples are packed with good carbs like natural sugars and starches for quick energy. If the plain apple-a-day doesn’t entice your palate, try mixing it in with Cuisinart’s original recipe for Curried Chicken Salad with Apples and Toasted Almonds.

Honey is also a great source of natural sugars and provides a quick energy boost to the muscles. Honey has natural probiotics, aiding with digestion while helping to protect your body from bad bacteria. Add more honey to your diet by trying these delicious Honey Ginger Glazed Carrots.

Dark Chocolate is full of flavanoids which increase blood flow to the brain, making you feel more alert. Dark chocolate is one of the most delicious ways to get a dose of antioxidants as well. Treat yourself with this Dark Chocolate Sorbet.
