It’s more than likely that you aren’t taking full advantage of your microwave! In many households there’s a lingering idea that cooking food in the microwave isn’t as tasty or isn’t as healthy. This isn’t necessarily true. In fact, cooking in the microwave may be the least damaging to nutrients in your food.
People normally use the microwave to reheat their food but you may be missing out on some convenient and faster meals that can be made. Here’s a list of foods that you can cook in the microwave:
Applesauce – For each finely chopped apple, add 1/4 cup of water and place in a microwave-safe bowl. Cover the bowl with a plate and microwave for 4 minutes, uncover and stir. Microwave for 5 more minutes (or until apples are tender) and add cinnamon, lemon juice and sugar to taste.
Potato Chips- Thinly slice your potato about 1/8 inch thick or less. The Cuisinart Mandoline is great for the job. Spray the slices with non-stick spray, sprinkle with salt and pepper and microwave for 4-5 minutes on a piece of parchment paper.
Spinach – You can steam spinach in the microwave by placing the leaves in a bowl with a bit of water (or if you’re steaming immediately after washing them, don’t add water). Cook on high until all of the leaves are dark green, 3-7 minutes.
Corn on the Cob– If the husks are still attached just microwave for 4 or 5 minutes. If not, wrap it in wet paper towels instead.
