I generally drink my coffee black. Once the kids are tucked in, though, I sometimes like to satisfy my sweet tooth with my cup of joe. Since running to Starbucks isn’t an option at nighttime, I steam some milk and create my own coffee drinks at home. One of my favorites is a mocha, and the “recipe” is just three ingredients—decaf espresso, steamed milk and a teaspoon or two of chocolate ganache. For a spicy treat, add a dash of chili powder. I’ll get you started with this easy recipe for homemade chocolate ganache. I think you’ll agree it’s the perfect sweet escape after a long day.

Chocolate Ganache
makes about 2 cups

1 cup heavy cream
2/3 cup sugar
6 ounces finely chopped bittersweet chocolate

Add cream and sugar to a small pot. Bring to a simmer, but do not let it come to a boil. Cook for 1 to 2 minutes, until sugar has dissolved. Add chocolate to a deep heat-proof bowl. Pour hot cream mixture over chocolate and stir with a rubber spatula until combined and chocolate is melted. Transfer to a glass or BPA-free plastic container and let cool slightly before covering and storing in refrigerator. Will last for up to one month, refrigerated.
