With all of the fatty, overly processed, extra-fried and super-sweetened foods out there you may be nervous about whether or not your baby will grow up to be a healthy eater. Eating habits start in the home, so it’s best to start your baby off early! This way, when your baby starts to make his/her own meal decisions, they are used to the good stuff and won’t settle for less!
So, what steps should a parent take to influence healthy eating habits?
Set the Example – When children are still young, they want to do whatever the grownups are doing, including eating what they are eating. Take advantage of this while you still can! Make healthy eating choices in front of your children. This not only includes choosing healthy foods, but eating those meals together!
Don’t Force! – Babies can be picky eaters. They also can just be stubborn eaters, not wanting exactly what’s in front of them. One way to counter this behavior is allowing them to choose what they want to eat! Put a number of healthy foods in front of them and allow them to choose. Let your baby taste a few different super foods and feed them the ones they like!
Make Homemade Baby Food – The best way to make sure your baby gets used to healthy meal choices is to only feed them healthy meals! How can you make sure each meal is healthy? By making it yourself! Keep as many delicious and nutritious foods as you can handy and when your baby is hungry start pureeing!
Here’s a healthy starter meal for your baby to try adapted from Weelicious:
Apple Walnut Puree
Makes 6 servings
2 apples, cored and peeled
1/4 cup walnuts, shelled & halved
1/8 teaspoons cinnamon
Place apples and walnuts in a steamer pot over boiling water.
Cook for 7 minutes or until apples are fork tender.
Place apples, walnuts, cinnamon and 3 tbsp of the water from the steamer pot in the Baby Food Maker & Bottle Warmer and puree for 3 minutes or until smooth.
Cool and serve.
