Johnson & Wales University Will Dedicate New LEED Building to Cuisinart

Underlines Cuisinart’s Longstanding Commitment to Culinary Education

STAMFORD, CT, OCTOBER 27, 2010—In recognition of Cuisinart’s longstanding relationship with the College of Culinary Arts at Johnson & Wales University (JWU), the institution will officially name its new 82,000-square-foot education facility in Providence, Rhode Island, the Cuisinart Center for Culinary Excellence  at a dedication ceremony on December 12, 2010.

The LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certified designed facility is a pioneering example of education meeting environment, with an emphasis on global influences and sustainability. The JWU building has been designed to meet standards for certification that include quality of indoor environment, efficient use of water (in this case using captured rainwater for landscape irrigation) and reduced energy usage. The interiors of the facility are energy-efficient and designed to allow natural light to stream through the building, while a white roof and light-colored concrete building exterior reduce the impact of reflected heat released back into the environment.

“The building opened with great approval from students and faculty this fall as the new academic year began, with Johnson & Wales students eager to learn through academic rigor, professional skill development and leadership training, preparing them to lead the world of culinary arts and foodservice management,” says University President John Bowen, a class of ’77 JWU alumnus. “For many years, Cuisinart has actively participated in the furtherance of our university’s mission, and the company’s excellence in its initiatives, products and innovative approach to food preparation and cooking align with the quality of our program. It is a fitting tribute to put Cuisinart’s name on a facility that memorializes that excellence with an eye towards the future and the training of the next generation of industry leaders.”

The new facility’s layout and equipment reflect JWU’s reputation as an international leader in career education, with over 83,000 graduates from 140 countries in demand worldwide. The Cuisinart Center for Culinary Excellence contains 30 educational labs and classrooms for culinary arts, including dedicated hot and cold kitchens; labs for chocolate and pastry preparation; meat-cutting and fabrication labs; bake shops; and an artisan bread lab. There are also three dining rooms; academic classroom spaces; and areas dedicated to the study of wine production, mixology and microbrewing.

“Cuisinart’s participation in Johnson & Wales’ innovative education facility is the natural next step in the partnership that has connected us with the university for many years,” says Mary Rodgers, Director of Marketing Communications for Cuisinart. “Naming the building the Cuisinart Center for Culinary Excellence is in itself a great honor, and reinforces the company’s relationship with the university. It also emphasizes our commitment to a culinary facility recognized as a major training ground for future chef talent and for groundbreaking achievements in the food preparation and foodservice industry.”
