Karol's Chocolate Cake

This recipe comes from my recipe box and from my mother's heart. My mother loved to entertain, loved to cook and had a huge helping of the gift of hospitality! Her own recipe box overflowed with timeless recipes from her own mother and many of the people she met throughout her life's journey. Though she is gone now, my family can still savor her sweet spirit when I share her best recipes with my own family and friends."


2 cups Sugar
2 cups flour
1 stick butter
1/2 cup Crisco shortening
4 T Cocoa
1 cup water
2 eggs
1/2 cup buttermilk
1 t baking soda
1 t vanilla

Icing: 1 stick margarine, 3 T cocoa, 6 T milk, 1 box of powdered sugar


Mix together sugar and flour in a medium bowl. In a sauce pan, bring to a soft boil: 1 stick butter, shortening 4 T cocoa and water. In a large bowl, add sauce pan mixture to 2 eggs, buttermilk, baking soda and vanilla. Add flour mixture and bake in a 11x16 greased and floured pan 20 minutes at 350 degrees. For the icing, use same saucepan and mix together 1 stick margarine, 3 T cocoa, 6 T milk. Bring to a soft boil and mix in 1 box of powdered sugar. Pour over cake while hot.
