If you’re wondering whether or not olive oil is safe for your baby, stop wondering. This nutrient-rich oil has a ton of health benefits you don’t want your baby to miss out on!
Olive oil is known to prevent cardiovascular problems, aid in digestion and promote bone health while the monounsaturated fats help lower bad cholesterol and increase good cholesterol. It also has anti-inflammatory properties and even prevents certain cancers. Not to mention it’s a great source of antioxidants and vitamins A, C, D, E, K and B vitamins. You get the idea: they’re really healthy! Babies ages 6 months and older can safely have olive oil.
When you’re ready to add it to your baby food recipes make sure you are using EVOO (extra virgin olive oil). It’s a great substitute for less healthy oils such as margarine. Drizzle it on bread or blend it into baby purees.
Baby's Creamy Broccoli Soup adapted from Momtastic’s Wholesome Baby Food
2 teaspoons extra virgin olive oil
1 small onion, chopped
1 package (10 ounces) frozen broccoli
1 1/2 cups chicken broth
1/4 teaspoon marjoram or oregano
1 cup reduced-fat (2%) milk
Sauté onions in olive oil over medium heat until softened. Add broccoli, chicken broth, and marjoram and bring to a boil over medium-high heat.
Reduce heat to medium-low and simmer until broccoli is softened. Remove from heat and stir in milk. Purée in batches in the Baby Food Maker & Bottle Warmer. Heat through to serve.
