Leafy greens are definitely stars when it comes to nutritious value. They are great additions to smoothies when you’re looking for a quick health boost, but why stick to just one? Don’t miss out of the benefits of other greens you may not have thought of. Here’s our list of the top five greens for smoothies:
Kale: One of the most talked about greens lately, and for good reason. Kale is extremely nutritious, low in calories and high in fiber, iron, vitamins K, A, C and calcium. Not only that, it’s also a detox food! However, kale can have a strong taste so don’t overdo it in your smoothie recipe.
Spinach: Probably the default smoothie green, but we aren’t complaining! This super food is one of the best sources of potassium, vitamins A, B12, C and K. Spinach aids in fighting many cancers and helps boost eye health and heart health. It’s mild enough not to ruin the taste of sweet smoothies.
Romaine Lettuce: Not only low in calories, but great for your heart. Packed with vitamin C and beta-carotene, this green helps lower cholesterol and artery build up. It’s slightly bitter so make sure you put it in a smoothie full of flavor.
Chard: This is a soft, mild green, making it perfect for smoothies. Just like the other greens that made it on the list, chard is packed with nutrients including vitamins K, A, C, magnesium, potassium, iron and fiber. Chard is also known for being able to regulate blood sugar levels. If you have or are at risk of diabetes Chard is the way to go!
Parsley: Curly parsley is the green we know for garnishing, but Italian parsley is less bitter which makes it a great smoothie choice. In fact, its flavor can be a great complement to other flavors in your recipe. Parsley promotes heart health, prevents certain cancers, enhances your immune system and can even fight bad breath.
Green Goddess Smoothie
1 cup almond milk
1 ½-inch piece of fresh ginger, peeled
4 lacinato kale leaves, ribs removed
1 small Golden delicious apple, peeled & diced
1 banana, peeled
Place all ingredients in the bowl of your Cuisinart blender. Blend until smooth. Serve immediately.
