Tofu for Baby

Tofu is a soybean curd that’s rich in protein, calcium and iron. It has been a staple in Asian foods for ages but has recently become popular in America. It’s perfect for babies around 8 months of age. Tofu can come firm, soft and silken. Firm has the highest amounts of protein and iron and second highest amount of calcium.

Because soy is a potential allergen, you should introduce this food to your baby separate from other foods at first and monitor if there are any reaction over several hours after feeding. If you have concerns about genetically modified soy, there are plenty of non-GMO tofu options such as the Nasoya and Mori-Nu brands. Be sure to consult your pediatrician before introducing your baby to new foods.

There are plenty of ways babies can enjoy tofu. Cut into small chunks, it’s is a quick and easy finger food. You can blend it into fruits and vegetables or add silken tofu into food like yogurt.

Once you’ve determined that tofu is safe for your baby, try this recipe:

Tofu Dinner

Ingredients:
1 cup cooked brown rice
1/4 cup sweet potato purée
1/2 cup tofu, cubed
2 tablespoons green vegetable purée
1/4 cup avocado pulp

Place all ingredients in work bowl of Cuisinart® food processor fitted with metal chopping blade. Process to desired consistency. For the smoothest consistency, add breast milk or formula as desired. Store in airtight container in refrigerator for up to 2 days.
