The History of the Sandwich:
The modern sandwich was invented in 1762 by John Montague, the fourth Earl of Sandwich. According to the Wheat Foods Council, Library of Congress, U.S. Army, Mr. Montague was seriously engaged in a game of cards and asked that bread, cheese and meat be brought to him to quell his hunger. He then put the meat and cheese inside two outer layers of bread, prompting the other players to request “the same as Sandwich.” In 1827, the sandwich came to America in a cookbook by an English woman named Elisabeth Leslie, who included a recipe for ham sandwiches as a main dish. In 1900, commercial bakeries began producing loaves of soft white bread for retail sale and by the 1920’s, children were carrying sandwiches to school in metal buckets, fueling the popularity of the sandwich as we know it today.
